I had a personal experience recently with the airport authorities while taking a budget airline. I was there with my family 2 hours before boarding early in the morning and as usual we queue to check-in. I am a frequent flyer to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia and Jakarta, Indonesia. As my baggage were disposed to be weight, one of the airport supervisor in Singapore said that my first bag was overweight and to my acknowledgement if we are travelling together, each person and ticket is granted 20kg and do not exceed 25kg or there will be charges. I had 6 members of my family with me and I’m confident that the whole group will get 140kg of baggage space. I read the weight meter it says 36kg and I still had the rest of my 4 baggage to fill up for my 140kg baggage space. Instead they, told us if we do not have 1 bag weighing 32kg each, our baggage will not be carried through the cargo. Since it was early in the morning and I haven’t got any breakfast, I agitatedly open one by one my baggage and weight to their request and nagged all the way while transfering my things.
Feeling embarrassed and annoyed, suddenly my mind strucked to ask them a question. I asked when this rule was made and the lady Supervisor answered it was 3 years ago. My anger boiled up and told her that last two weeks I was here taking the same flight and destination and one of my baggage had more than the one I had now, and that time I was traveling together with 5 people and the airline staffs did not mention anything about this rule. She couldn’t answer my questions and start blaming her subordinates. I told her to prove me a letter that state the rule and yet she stood there making her own nagging voice yet louder to the subordinates. In a way to make her pay our embarrassment, we irritatingly turn out loud in demanding the rules. She just kept quiet while her subordinate arrange for our boarding pass.
After all the boarding passes were issued, I checked all the names and my husband name was incorrectly spell and I told them sarcasticly that my husband could be in trouble through their little mistakes when we go through the police in immigration. They did amend my husband boarding pass and we told them we will complain them to their companies for not providing us proper information during our check-in.
My advise for all travellers is that you may be cheated to do things that the law in that country or even airlines did not advise and may be very embarrassed or hard work if you get across inexperience airport staffs like them and these things do happen in a country as sophisticated and well-known for their service like Singapore. Mistakes could happen but we can get in trouble with other airport authorities due to their own airport staffs who did it if we are not careful while they are handling our documents or things irresponsibly.
